Technology is key to face the grand challenges of Humankind, which can very well be summarized by the overarching challenge of sustainable development. Even though the concept of sustainable development is a recent one, the concern to provide vital resources to a growing population can be traced back, at least, to the grim predictions of Thomas Malthus. History has shown that science and technology boost total factor productivity, leading to economic growth, an ever increasing supply of new goods and services and much better living standards for most of the World growing population. Nevertheless this evolution cannot take forever for two main reasons:
- A widening gap is developing between poor and rich countries. While it is true that in most countries living standards are much higher than a century ago, it is also certain that wealth and poverty have evolved very differently across the Globe. Unacceptable poverty crumbles the hopes for a better future of too many of our fellow human beings, and brings political unstability and worries to all of us.
- Anthropogenic stress on natural resources, due to current models of economic growth, compromises their future availability and rises major enviromental risks for next generations. Developing economies, encompassing most of the human population, will provide a much more significant impact as they grow
United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDG)
The current conceptual flow of sustainable development ideas is testimony to visionary tributaries, which contributed over the last decades remarkable insights and agendas. The Limits to Growth report to the Club of Rome, was an early and influential milestone in 1972, followed by United Nations' Our Common Future, in 1986. These paved the way to United Nations Earth Summits, the first one held in Rio de Janeiro in 1992, followed by Rio+10 and Rio+20, and to United Nations World Summits, starting with the UN Millennium Summit in New York, in 2000. These and other efforts led to the current 17 United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) and to the Sustainable Development Agenda.
Health and medical care concern to each and every person in the World. Making health and medical care available to all and everyone is crutial to humankind and explicitly considered by the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) and Agenda of United Nations. It is not only an ethical obligation; it is also an opportunity for innovation and for economic development across the World. Technology, education, mindful adaptation to social and economic reality, alongside with international collaboration and cooperation are key for success.
We aim to contribute to the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) and Agenda by innovating, developing and investigating medical technology that is properly adapted to the circumstances of developing countries, which is useful for education and feasible for technology transfer to bussinesses and health service providers. To this extent, we collaborate in research, innovation and educational projects, and, taking advantage of available expertise and convenient geographic location, promote a specialized international cooperation for development hub in this field at the University of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, where students, academics, researchers, technologists, service providers, entrepreneurs, businesses and investors from all over the world can meet, train, educate and interact.

Our mission is conceived to address and make a genuine contribution to specific UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) and particular targets:
- Goal 3 - Good Health and Well-Being:
- By 2030, reduce by one third premature mortality from non-communicable diseases through prevention and treatment and promote mental health and well-being.
- Strengthen the capacity of all countries, in particular developing countries, for early warning, risk reduction and management of national and global health risks.
- Goal 4 - Ensure inclusive and quality education for all and promote lifelong learning:
- By 2030, ensure equal access for all women and men to affordable and quality technical, vocational and tertiary education, including university.
- By 2030, substantially increase the number of youth and adults who have relevant skills, including technical and vocational skills, for employment, decent jobs and entrepreneurship.
- By 2020, substantially expand globally the number of scholarships available to developing countries, in particular least developed countries, small island developing States and African countries, for enrolment in higher education, including vocational training and information and communications technology, technical, engineering and scientific programmes, in developed countries and other developing countries.
- By 2030, substantially increase the supply of qualified teachers, including through international cooperation for teacher training in developing countries, especially least developed countries and small island developing states.
- Goal 8 - Promote inclusive and sustainable economic growth, employment and decent work for all
- Achieve higher levels of economic productivity through diversification, technological upgrading and innovation, including through a focus on high-value added and labour-intensive sectors.
- Promote development-oriented policies that support productive activities, decent job creation, entrepreneurship, creativity and innovation, and encourage the formalization and growth of micro-, small- and medium-sized enterprises, including through access to financial services.
- Goal 9 - Build resilient infrastructure, promote sustainable industrialization and foster innovation
- Enhance scientific research, upgrade the technological capabilities of industrial sectors in all countries, in particular developing countries, including, by 2030, encouraging innovation and substantially increasing the number of research and development workers per 1 million people and public and private research and development spending.
- Facilitate sustainable and resilient infrastructure development in developing countries through enhanced financial, technological and technical support to African countries, least developed countries, landlocked developing countries and small island developing States.
- Support domestic technology development, research and innovation in developing countries, including by ensuring a conducive policy environment for, inter alia, industrial diversification and value addition to commodities.
As a multidisciplinary, international, informal team, we are committed to the advance of science and technology for the benefit of Humankid through research, education, collaboration and international cooperation in the area of medical technology. We hope that this multilingual wikisite is an opportunity to share and strengthen common views and projects with such aim. This is a dream that has to come true!
