The segmentation consists in the delineated of structures of interest inside a medical image. By means of this delineated, or contour, achieves isolate a structure 2D or 3D. Of this form draw the anatomical structures of separate form.

The segmentation can do of manual or semi-automatic form, but always needs of an intervention by part of the operator, that has to identify structures by sight it/anatomical region that wishes segment. The accuracy of the results obtained goes to depend on three factors:

  • The quality of the data of entrance
  • The knowledge of the tools of segmentation by part of the operator
  • The knowledges of anatomy by part of the operator

Can say that the two first factors are dependent of the software, but the last is it of the human element. The operator that know to interpret with accuracy what there is represented in the image with which is working will obtain better results than who not have the eye trained, although both possess the same level of skill in the handle of the 3DSlicer and work with the same image.

Tools

There are two available modules in 3DSlicer for this task:

  • Editor
  • Segment Editor (from the version 4.8 of Slicer)

In function of the module that use the procedure is different, as follows.

Strategy

Likewise, in function of the tools will explain the strategy to be followed to attain the result wished in the segmentation.
