ALI. Acute Lung Injury. Acute lung injury is a severe respiratory failure, due to non-cardiogenic pulmonary edema. There are two pathogenic types: pulmonary or primary ARDS, when it occurs due to direct alveolar aggression, and extrapulmonary or secondary ARDS, when there is indirect damage to the lung as a complication of a systemic disease: sepsis, severe trauma with shock and multiple transfusions or acute pancreatitis, among others.
