The University of Las Palmas of Gran Canaria (ULPGC), through its Interreg Project - MAC of Medical Technology for Sustainable Development, MACbioIDi, and in collaboration with Casa África, organized this Roundtable under the heading of "Women and Science" in which professionals from the world of science, medicine and engineering participated to share their personal experiences and value the role of women in these fields of study.
Mr. Luis Padrón, General Director of Casa África, was in charge of opening the session and introducing its participants. These speakers were: María Alexandra Fernandes Rodrigues, Professor Doctor at the Eduardo Mondlane University (UEM) of Maputo, Mozambique; Joseane da Rosa from Pina Ferreira, Director of the Radiology and Diagnostic Imaging Service at the Dr. Agostinho Neto Hospital in Praia, Cape Verde; Yolanda Martín, Telecommunications Engineer, at the Instituto de Astrofísica de Canarias (IAC), Canarias; Almudena Sánchez Villegas, PhD in Pharmacy and Professor at the University of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria (ULPGC) in the area of Preventive Medicine and Public Health, Canary Islands, and lastly, Asmaa Skareb, PhD in Organizational Management and Project Manager of the MACbioIDi Project, Morocco.
At the time of debate, the topics addressed were several, among them, the challenges of living in a world where initiative and recognition have been led by men. Furthermore, ways to consolidate the role of women in the scientific world and their contribution to their development and prestige. All the participants agreed that the vertiginous changes that we experience today force us to look for new ways of development and recognition of women in all scientific areas of the world of science.
