About our hub
The Canary Islands are an outermost region of the European Union, and a Spanish Autonomous Community. It is an archipelago known for its good climate, its beauty and its impressive tourist sector. The Canary Islands are located in the northwest of West Africa, a few kilometres west of the Maghreb coast, at the same latitude as Florida.
The regiones ultraperiféricas de la Unión Europea (RUPs) are endowed with special treatment in accordance with Article 349 of Treaty on the Functioning of the European Union. This is to mitigate its structural difficulties caused by the distance to the European continent, its frequent territorial fragmentation, and the lack of a critical mass due to its small relative size and population. Their neighboring nations are, usually, developing countries. Although these geographical facts have traditionally been considered as disadvantages, current European policies consider them assets that must be leveraged. Certainly, the geo-strategic locations of the ORs, together with their enormous biodiversity, geology, long coastal lines, clean skies, logistics infrastructures dimension and political and economic stability, make them extremely attractive to carry out activities of high added value, which are not feasible in other places. For this reason, the outermost regions have been considered the outposts of the European Union in the world(seeCOM/2008/0642 final)
