Roundtable ‘ Woman and Science ‘ at Casa Africa with African and Macaronesian researchers

The University of Las Palmas of Gran Canaria (ULPGC), through its project Interreg-MAC of medical technology for sustainable development, MACBIOIDI, in collaboration with Casa Africa, held a roundtable on “Woman and Science.” Professionals from the world of science, medicine and engineering have shared their experiences and highlighted the role of women in the world of science as well as the advances women have achieved in the twentieth century at worldwide level and those that still need to be achieved in this 21st century. Under the slogan “Woman in Science and Technology” This table was held at Casa Africa and was attended by its director, Luis Padrón and the vice-rector of Culture and Society, María del Pino Quintana Montesdeoca. The roundtable consisted of five professionals from different countries in their idiosyncrasy and in their scientific and technological fields, such as Morocco, Mozambique, Cape Verde and the Canary Islands. María Alexandra Fernandes, PhD professor at the Eduardo Mondlane University (EMU) in Maputo, Mozambique; Joseane da Rosa de Pina Ferreira, director of radiology and imaging services at Hospital Dr. Agostinho Neto de Praia, Cape Verde; Yolanda Martín, telecommunications engineer at the Astrophysics Institute of the Canary Islands (IAC), Canary Islands; Almudena Sánchez Villegas, PhD in pharmacy and professor at the University of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria (ULPGC) in the area of preventive medicine and public health, Canary Islands; Asmaa Skareb, PhD in Organizational management and project Manager of the MACbioIDi project, Morocco. We also had the presence of the journalist Carmen Vecino as moderator of the table. They debated the main challenges of living each day in a world in which initiative and recognition has hitherto been led by men. All participants raised ways of consolidating the role of women in the scientific world and their contribution to its development and prestige. The vertiginous changes that we are experiencing today force us to look for new ways of developing and recognizing women in all areas of the world of science.
